Week 1 - 49ers vs Bears Preview, Betting Picks

49ers:

The 49ers enter the season choosing to deploy Trey Lance as the Starting QB. It was an interesting offseason for them dealing with things like the Jimmy Garoppolo and Deebo Samuel situations. It seems to me like these, and a few other things were a major distraction for the team all offseason, and I think some of that will linger early into their schedule. Beyond Trey Lance, this is essentially the same team as last year. They do have a stout defense across all three levels to hang their hat on, which will undoubtedly help them win games this season.

Bears:

The Bears enter the season with very low expectations from outside influences. Nobody expects this team to be any good. Justin Fields is entering what I would consider a "Prove-it" year. He was awful last season in his rookie debut. The Bears O-line was arguably the worst in the entire NFL. Their pass Defense was statistically the worst in the NFL. There wasn't many good things to say about this Bears team at any point during this offseason. To add onto the misery, start Linebacker Roquan Smith made a public trade request, and clearly stated he wants out. He's still with the team for now, and hopes to be a bright spot for this Bears team.

Game Prediction:

The 49ers are -6.5 favorites at the time of writing this, The Over/Under currently sits at 40.5 (Fanduel Sportsbook).

Trey Lance is the real wild card in this matchup. I think that Coach Shanahan will limit his pass attempts early this season, and I'm expecting a heavy dose of the run game with Eli Mitchell, Jeff Wilson and even Deebo Samuel leading the charge. The Bears Defense is very susceptible to a powerful run game, as we saw several times last season. Lance may take off running a few times as well, but with Roquan Smith on the other end of things, I could see the Bears shutting that down rather easily.

Similar to the 49ers, the key for the Bears Offense in this game will be how effectively they are able to run the ball. I expect the Bears to give both David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert a lot of action in this one to try to open things up for the passing game downfield. I'm also a believer that if the Bears want to keep up with the 49ers in this game, Justin Fields will need to be dynamic with his arm and his legs. He's capable of running the football himself as a dual-threat QB. He'll need to be looking to run the ball himself early and often in my opinion. He's fully capable of taking over the game if he's successful at doing so. All that being said, he'll have to rely on a questionable Bears Offensive line, which didn't show any clear signs of improvement this pre-season if you ask me.

Although everything above may not fully point to it, I'm going to back the Bears in this Week 1 matchup. I like them at +6.5, and I lean the Under 40.5 here. Both of these teams running games will drain the clock quickly, especially if they're able to put together long drives.

Simply put, I just don't trust Trey Lance yet. The hesitancy of the 49ers staff all offseason to just fully move forward with him as the starting QB tells me a lot. To be honest, I think Lance will be benched for Garoppolo before Thanksgiving.

My Bets for This Game:

Bears +6.5 -110 for 1u (Fanduel Sportsbook)
